Weeks 7, 8 - Counting 1-10

This is week 7 and 8 of the program. Skipping weeks is highly discouraged. Many children already know the concepts covered in weeks 7 and 8. However, it is critical that they experience these activities, so that the concepts become more firmly rooted in their brains.

Repetition Is Key
Each time your student or child repeats this activity, the pathways in the brain that form understanding for these concepts, become larger and stronger. Your child may already know how to count from 1 to 10, but that is not the only goal. Skipping weeks will decrease your child's opportunity for this important repetition.

Week 7:
Time: 20 minutes each day for five days.

Instructions: Have the child or children count from 1 to 10 repeating each number in order for 10 minutes. Repeat this again later in the day.

Purpose: Students will learn the order of these numbers. They will memorize this order so firmly that they can do it in their sleep. This activity should be completed even if you feel that the student has already mastered these concepts.

Week 8:
Time: 20 minutes each day for five days.

Instruction: Place students in front of the game at the top of this screen. Have students watch and count out loud with the computer. For the first 5 minutes students should be shown an easily understood / clear set of numbers, such as "Sway". This will insure that they learn what the numbers look like.

Every five minutes the number should be changed to a new type.

Purpose: Students will begin to associate the number names with the number shapes. Students will learn to identify numbers of various shapes, sizes, and colors. This activity should be completed even if you feel that the student has already mastered these concepts.
